Canada Takes Beef Over US Meat Labeling Back To WTO

Law360, New York (August 19, 2013, 7:58 PM EDT) -- The Canadian government said Monday it has asked the World Trade Organization to set up a compliance panel to re-examine the U.S.'s requirement that meat products have country of origin labels, a policy that has provoked outcries from Canada and Mexico and has previously drawn WTO scrutiny.

The requirement, which took effect roughly five years ago, has burdened meat producers in all three countries with additional costs and has proven to be "severely damaging to Canadian industry and jobs,"  Ed Fast, Canada's Minister of International Trade,...
