Calif. Senate OKs Bill To Let Noncitizens Sit On Juries

Law360, San Diego (August 20, 2013, 6:51 PM EDT) -- The California Senate on Monday passed a measure that would clear the way for noncitizen immigrants who are legal residents to be eligible for jury duty in the state.

On a 25-11 vote along party lines, the state Senate floor advanced A.B. 1401, which would amend existing law to include “lawful permanent immigrants” as prospective trial jurors. If approved by the governor, the measure would make California the first in the nation to do away with the restriction on noncitizens from serving on juries.
