North Carolina AG Opens New Front In Duke Rate Hike Battle

Law360, New York (August 21, 2013, 4:20 PM EDT) -- North Carolina's attorney general on Wednesday opened a new front in a consumer protection battle with Duke Energy, saying the utility's latest request for a rate hike is unreasonable and unfair to customers.

Attorney General Roy Cooper said Duke Energy Carolinas LLC's bid to increase rates by 4.5 percent for the first two years and then 5.1 percent after that did not meet the standard the North Carolina Supreme Court recently set for determining a utility's return on equity.
