FCC Pushes For Private-Industry Phone Unlocking Deal

Law360, New York (August 23, 2013, 3:46 PM EDT) -- The head of the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday that her agency would “redouble” its efforts to find a nonlegislative solution that allows consumers to 'unlock' their cellphones and use them with a different carrier.

Lawmakers have been grappling for months with an October decision by the Librarian of Congress that declared cellphone unlocking illegal under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Legislation that would reverse that decision seemingly has broad support in Washington, but no action has yet been taken.
