Big West, EPA Strike $18M Deal In Utah Refinery Action

Law360, New York (August 23, 2013, 5:11 PM EDT) -- Big West Oil LLC agreed on Friday to shell out $18 million for new emissions controls at an urban Utah refinery to settle a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suit accusing it of making modifications that increased hazardous emissions without installing required pollution controls.

In addition to the modification costs, Big West will pay more than a quarter million dollars to undertake a supplementary environmental project that will improve monitoring of hydrofluoric acid releases from the refinery, as well as another $175,000 in penalties.
