Baxter Halts Production Of Multidose Heparin Vials

Law360, New York (February 11, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Baxter International Inc. has temporarily stopped producing multiple-dose vials of the blood thinner heparin after receiving a rising number of reports of serious allergic reactions and lowered blood pressure from taking the drug.

The drugmaker's announcement came just weeks after it recalled nine lots of the injectable blood thinner that nearly killed actor Dennis Quaid's newborn twins. Although it is halting production of heparin, however, Baxter will continue distributing the medication.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it supported Baxter's plan of action.
