CMS Plans Further Crackdown On Test-Strip Billing

Law360, New York (August 27, 2013, 8:30 PM EDT) -- A competitive bidding program has dramatically lowered prices for diabetic test strips that cost Medicare more than $1 billion annually, and federal regulators are planning additional measures to reduce bills even more, according to an inspector general’s report Tuesday.

The audit backed up previous signals that competitive bidding has huge potential to save money, saying it has so far resulted in better prices and appears to be discouraging an array of improper billing tactics that called into question $425 million worth of payments in 2011....
