Steel Consortium Views BHP-Rio Merger With Alarm

Law360, New York (February 12, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- A global consortium of steel makers has called for scrutiny of a potential merger between mining giants Rio Tinto PLC and BHP Billiton Ltd. Joining a chorus of alarm, the International Iron and Steel Institute argued Tuesday that a merger would be disastrous for competition in iron ore.

The IISI said it had renewed its formal request that all relevant competition authorities review the proposed Rio Tinto buyout.
