China Halts New Energy Projects Over Pollution Violations

Law360, New York (August 29, 2013, 6:21 PM EDT) -- The Chinese government on Thursday suspended new projects from China National Petroleum Corp. and China Petrochemical Corp. after environmental regulators discovered that the energy giants fell short of pollution targets.

The Ministry of Environmental Protection said the two companies cannot move forward with proposed refining projects as well as planned expansion and renovation of their facilities, putting the work on hold indefinitely because of the violations.

CNPC missed the government's reduction goal for chemical oxygen demand, which is used to measure water pollution, the ministry said....
