Fla. Appeals Court Backs $33M Award For Smoker's Widow

Law360, Miami (September 4, 2013, 5:57 PM EDT) -- A Florida appeals court on Wednesday denied Lorillard Tobacco Co.'s request for a new trial and affirmed a $33 million award for the widow of a former smoker, saying the damages were not excessive.

Florida's Third District Court of Appeal rejected Lorillard's claim that it should get a new trial because the trial court found that the compensatory damages award of $20 million for plaintiff Dorothy Alexander was too high.
