Coast Guard Approves New Hazardous Materials Packaging

Law360, New York (September 5, 2013, 7:18 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Coast Guard on Thursday expanded the list of bulk packaging used for hazardous materials transfers, adding portable tanks and intermediate bulk containers primarily used by supply vessels traveling to and from offshore platforms during oil and natural gas exploration and production.

The final rule alters the agency's hazardous materials transfer requirements to include newer tanks and containers, eliminating the need to obtain special permits or approvals before they are used and providing energy companies with greater flexibility.
