U.S. Appeals WTO Ruling On Cotton Subsidies

Law360, New York (February 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The United States has appealed a ruling by the World Trade Organization that subsidies to U.S. cotton growers breached international trade rules and kept farmers in developing countries in extreme poverty.

A spokeswoman for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, Gretchen Hamel, confirmed that the appeal had been lodged Tuesday, following a ruling by the WTO's compliance panel that continuing support to U.S. farmers had caused the international price of cotton to plummet.
