Alaska Diocese To Enter Ch. 11 Amid Abuse Claims

Law360, New York (February 14, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Having failed to reach settlements with claimants alleging they were sexually abused by diocese workers, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska, said it would file for Chapter 11 protection within the next five weeks. The diocese follows in the path of several others that have sought refuge in bankruptcy from huge settlements in the ongoing scandal.

Bishop Donald J. Kettler said Wednesday that settlement talks with attorneys representing more than 140 claimants have broken down because the diocese's insurance carrier CNA won't participate meaningfully....
