Detroit Retirees Ask Federal Court To Weigh Bankruptcy

Law360, New York (September 11, 2013, 5:07 PM EDT) -- Detroit's official committee of retirees on Wednesday asked a Michigan federal court to consider the constitutional, statutory and factual challenges to the city's bankruptcy filing, saying the bankruptcy court does not have the constitutional authority to determine the issues.

The committee joined the fray surrounding the city's bid for eligibility Tuesday, adding its voice to the argument that the city cannot stabilize itself on the backs of retired workers and that the Chapter 9 petition violates Michigan's sovereignty.
