London Police Must Pay Sony Insurers For Riot Damage

Law360, New York (September 12, 2013, 7:27 PM EDT) -- A U.K. judge on Thursday said London police must pay back insurance companies whose policies covered a Sony Corp. warehouse that was looted and destroyed by fire during 2011 riots.

The judge based his decision on his interpretation of the 1886 Riot Act, which says the government is liable for damages when that damage arises from “persons riotously and tumultuously assembled together.” The unrest took place in August 2011 following the police shooting of a man named Mark Duggan in Tottenham, a section of northern London....
