Same-Sex Marriage Licenses Halted By Pa. Judge

Law360, Philadelphia (September 12, 2013, 2:21 PM EDT) -- A Pennsylvania state judge on Thursday ordered a county official to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples, concluding that it was not his role to determine whether the state’s law preventing the marriages was unconstitutional.

Commonwealth Court Judge Dan Pellegrini ruled that Montgomery County Register of Wills and Orphans' Court Clerk D. Bruce Hanes had overstepped his bounds when he began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in July, defying a 1996 state law defining marriage as between one man and one woman.
