Appeals Court Denies Jailed Texas Judge's Plea For Release

Law360, Houston (September 13, 2013, 3:18 PM EDT) -- A Texas judge indicted on abuse of office charges lost his bid Thursday to escape a 45-day jail sentence for making incendiary remarks about the case against him when a state appeals court ruled it lacked power to consider the plea.

The Fourteenth District Court of Appeals rejected Galveston County Court at Law Judge Christopher Dupuy’s petition for a writ of habeas corpus, saying that its jurisdiction to consider such requests is limited to orders issued in civil suits.
