Miss. Judge Fined Over Misconduct In $322M Asbestos Case

Law360, New York (October 7, 2013, 3:23 PM EDT) -- Mississippi's high court fined a state judge on Thursday for failing to recuse himself from an asbestos lawsuit that initially resulted in a $322 million verdict against Union Carbide Corp. and another company, when in the past his father had entered an asbestos-related settlement with Union Carbide.

The Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance advised that Judge Eddie Bowen be publicly reprimanded and assessed costs of $200 for his misconduct in the case, but that penalty does not go far enough, the Mississippi Supreme Court ruled. The...
