Japan Flexes Antitrust Muscle Outside Its Borders

Law360, New York (February 22, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The Japan Fair Trade Commission has issued cease-and-desist orders against Bridgestone Corp.of Japan and four foreign firms involved in an alleged international marine hose cartel. The action marks the first time the country has ever imposed administrative penalties on companies outside its borders.

The commission said Friday that it has also ordered Dunlop Oil & Marine Ltd. of the U.K., Trelleborg Industries SAS of France, and Manuli Rubber Industries S.p.A and Parker ITR S.r.L, both of Italy, to halt anti-competitive practices regarding the hoses, which are...
