Shutdown Harms CDC's Outbreak Tracking, Dems Say

Law360, New York (October 10, 2013, 6:27 PM EDT) -- The government shutdown is hurting the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's ability to track and find foodborne illness and other outbreaks, top Democratic lawmakers said Thursday, urging House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to end the funding cutoff.

In a letter to Boehner, Reps. Henry Waxman of California, Frank Pallone Jr. of New Jersey and Diana DeGette of Colorado pointed to a nationwide salmonella outbreak announced earlier in the week. The outbreak has sickened 278 people in 17 states.
