GAO Urges Medicare To Cut Social Security Info From Cards

Law360, New York (October 18, 2013, 3:16 PM EDT) -- The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services must establish an IT system to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards in order to protect consumers from identity theft, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Thursday.

The GAO report said CMS has taken some steps so far by collecting information on how to remove these numbers from the cards, but has yet to act on that by developing an IT project to come up with a way to actually implement a plan.
