High Court Snubs Big Tobacco's Latest Appeal

Law360 (February 25, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Big Tobacco's challenge to a state court's treatment of punitive damages in product liability litigation was snuffed Monday, when the U.S. Supreme Court passed on a petition for a hearing by four major U.S. cigarette companies.

Though the high court did not disclose its reasons for denying a writ of certiorari, the case's similarity to a punitive damages challenge by Exxon Mobil Corp., set for hearing before the justices later this month, may explain the rebuff.
