Under Pressure, Pfizer Pulls Jarvik's Lipitor Ads

Law360, New York (February 25, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Under scrutiny from Congress, Pfizer Inc. said Monday it is withdrawing the Lipitor commercials that center on Dr. Robert Jarvik, who invented an artificial heart but is not licensed to practice medicine.

Ian Read, Pfizer's president of worldwide pharmaceutical operations, released a statement Monday endorsing Jarvik's reputation as a medical expert and regretting the controversy surrounding Jarvik's promotional role for the blockbuster cholesterol drug.

“Going forward,” Read said, “we commit to ensuring there is greater clarity in our advertising regarding the presentation of spokespeople.”
