Advocacy Groups Oppose Fast-Track Trade Power

Law360, New York (October 23, 2013, 4:20 PM EDT) -- More than a dozen public interest groups Wednesday urged lawmakers not to renew “fast-track” trade authority, citing concerns over the secrecy of negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the agreement's potential intellectual property provisions.

Amnesty International, Public Citizen, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and 11 other public advocacy groups sent a letter to congressional leaders, saying that the TPP and other trade negotiations deserve “meaningful congressional oversight.” That oversight, the groups added, would be limited if the legislature authorizes trade promotion authority, which generally allows the executive...
