Senator Questions Student Data Managers' Privacy Controls

Law360, New York (October 23, 2013, 7:08 PM EDT) -- Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., warned the U.S. Department of Education on Tuesday that school districts’ outsourcing of student data storage and management to private contractors could place information security at risk and demands strict oversight.

In a letter to Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Markey asked the department for its opinion on the privacy implications of performance assessment software that can disseminate student information to vendors and for an overview of federal rules covering how such data can be stored and shared.
