Climate Bills Likely To Bring Risk To Utilities

Law360, New York (February 26, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- Government efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States could have significant credit implications for electric utilities, according to a report released Tuesday by Moody's.

The report, titled “The Cost of Climate Change,” said that a “growing scientific consensus on the causes and effects of climate change is driving a worldwide push for regulatory and legislative action.”

Though the ultimate costs to electric utilities cannot currently be estimated, companies are likely to spend billions of dollars in compliance, the report said.
