China New Energy To Build Cassava Biorefinery In Nigeria

Law360, New York (October 29, 2013, 2:06 PM EDT) -- China New Energy Ltd. has teamed up with Sunbird Bioenergy Africa Ltd. to build at least one biorefinery that will convert cassava into fuel in Nigeria, potentially extending the agreement for nine more, the companies announced Tuesday.

The first project, which China New Energy expects will enter full production by 2016, will convert cassava — also known as manioc or yuca root — into 100,000 metric tons of anhydrous ethanol annually.

China New Energy will use its proprietary method of pretreatment, fermentation, distillation and dehydration of the cassava, recently tested on a project in Thailand, while a local partner — OBAX...
