IRS Tech Systems Subject To Data Theft, Watchdog Says

Law360, New York (October 29, 2013, 6:43 PM EDT) -- Weaknesses in the Internal Revenue Service's $720 million information technology system that make taxpayer data vulnerable to theft and accidental public release came to light in a report released Friday by an IRS watchdog.

In the report, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration blasted the IRS after discovering 34 pieces of IT equipment valued at almost $1 million could not be located and that the IRS had likely tossed numerous IT assets before determining whether they contained sensitive taxpayer data.
