USPTO Settles With Veteran Urged To Withdraw Job App

Law360, Washington (October 30, 2013, 4:56 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Tuesday agreed to pay a veteran $29,000 after an agency supervisor violated his so-called employment preference rights by encouraging him to withdraw his job application to allow for the hiring of an acquaintance of the supervisor.

According to a U.S. Office of Special Counsel statement, the officer in questions was a “10 point veteran” under the system awarding employment preference points to veterans who are disabled or who have served on active duty during certain periods.
