Faroe Islands Hits EU With WTO Dispute Over Fish Ban

Law360, Washington (November 4, 2013, 7:00 PM EST) -- The Faroe Islands government launched a formal complaint against the European Union at the World Trade Organization on Monday, alleging the EU’s ban on herring and mackerel imports from the islands is “coercive.”

Although the EU claimed the sanctions were an attempt to protect the Atlanto-Scandian herring population, the Faroe government alleged the ban is an obvious attempt to “protect EU industry interests.”

EU’s sanctions, which began in August, also prevent vessels transporting Faroe herring and mackerel products from accessing EU ports, the country said....
