Justice O’Connor Pushes For Judicial Merit Selection In Pa.

Law360, Philadelphia (November 18, 2013, 9:32 PM EST) -- Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor encouraged a room of Pennsylvania lawyers on Monday evening to keep fighting to end the state’s existing system of partisan elections for judges, pushing the importance of judicial independence.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary gala for judicial reform group Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts, the justice emphasized that keeping the judiciary free of pressure from special interests was key to maintaining public faith in the institution.
