UK Lawmakers Advance Measure Targeting Old Coal Plants

Law360, New York (November 5, 2013, 4:51 PM EST) -- The upper house of the British Parliament on Monday approved changes to air regulations that would force all power plants to comply with new emissions performance standards to cut carbon emissions, ending an exemption for older coal-fired facilities.

The House of Lords voted 237-193 in favor of an amendment to the pending energy bill, allowing outdated generating stations to remain online only if they install pollution-abatement equipment to reduce the level of sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide and other contaminants entering the atmosphere.
