Arizona Approves Fee For Residential Solar Energy Panels

Law360, New York (November 15, 2013, 7:17 PM EST) -- State utility regulator Arizona Corporation Commission voted 3-2 Thursday to allow utility companies to tack on grid connection fees for new customers with rooftop solar panels, a decision that renewable energy activists say casts a dark shadow on the industry’s future.

Arizona Public Service, the state’s largest utility company and a proponent of the net metering policy change, said additional revenue is necessary to fund infrastructure costs that are falling on nonsolar customers as the number of homes generating solar power continues to climb.
