WTO Panel Finds Moral Backing For EU Seal Import Ban

Law360, New York (November 25, 2013, 7:04 PM EST) -- The European Union's ban on seal products is inconsistent with some of its international trade obligations, but justified on moral grounds, a World Trade Organization dispute settlement panel said in a ruling released Monday.

The dispute settlement panel handed down a mixed ruling on the EU regulation — which bans sales and imports of seal products, with certain exemptions for seal hunts conducted by indigenous or Inuit people and hunts done for marine resource management reasons.
