US Emits 50% More Methane Than EPA Estimates, Study Says

Law360, Los Angeles (November 25, 2013, 6:10 PM EST) -- The U.S. emits 50 percent more methane gas than estimated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, according to a comprehensive study published Monday on the second most important greenhouse gas based on human activity.

The EPA inventory of greenhouse gas emissions are based on assumptions of how factors, such as fossil fuel drilling, contribute to the atmosphere. But Monday’s study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, directly measured the levels of methane across the country.
