NY Civil Litigants Would Get Lawyers Under New State Bill

Law360, New York (November 26, 2013, 3:17 PM EST) -- A state lawmaker from Brooklyn, N.Y., introduced legislation Friday that would provide litigants with counsel in civil matters related to bank foreclosures and health care and employment disputes, among other matters, backing a push by the state's chief judge for a “Civil Gideon” law.

Brooklyn Democrat Kevin S. Parker's new bill would establish a right to counsel "in civil matters involving the basic necessities of life" some 50 years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Gideon v. Wainwright gave criminal defendants that right.
