German Watchdog Begins Probe Of $4B Fresenius-Rhoen Buy

Law360, New York (November 27, 2013, 2:34 PM EST) -- Germany's antitrust watchdog announced Wednesday that it has begun an in-depth investigation into Fresenius Helios' proposed $4 billion acquisition of hospitals from rival Rhoen-Klinikum AG, which would create Europe's largest private hospital operator.

The Federal Cartel Office, known domestically as Bundeskartellamt, said it would closely scrutinize the deal in order to ensure that it will not hinder competition in a way that affects patients.
