US, Others Press For Fishery Subsidy Cuts

Law360, New York (December 6, 2013, 4:46 PM EST) -- The U.S. and 11 other World Trade Organization countries meeting this week in Bali, Indonesia, have reiterated a call to end subsidies that contribute to overfishing and deplete already-stressed fishery resources, the U.S. trade representative's office said Friday.

The “Friends of Fish” group — comprised of 12 WTO members, including the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Norway and Peru — called for the elimination of “harmful” fishery subsidies, and pledged not to introduce or expand existing subsidies in a way that would lead to overfishing.
