BP Given Pass For Some Accidental Marine Mammal Deaths

Law360, New York (December 12, 2013, 3:00 PM EST) -- The U.S. government on Thursday gave a BP PLC unit a pass on a limited number of unintentional deaths or injuries of whales and seals associated with oil and gas drilling and production operations in Alaska's Beaufort Sea for the next five years.

The National Marine Fisheries Service issued a final rule granting BP Exploration Alaska Inc.'s request for so-called incidental take of six marine mammal species — bowhead, gray and beluga whales and ringed, bearded and spotted seals — starting in mid-January.
