Czech Brewer Wins Portuguese Ruling Over 'Budweiser' Name

Law360, New York (December 11, 2013, 3:56 PM EST) -- Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar NP said Wednesday that a Portuguese court had refused Anheuser-Busch InBev NV a trademark for “Budweiser” — the latest decision in a century-long global battle over the beer name.

Budvar and Anheuser-Busch have been fighting over beer trademarks since the 19th century, when both companies started brewing beers called Budweiser after the Czech town of Ceske Budejovice — or Budweis in German.
