RJ Reynolds Dodges $29M Award Over Smoker's Death

Law360, Miami (December 18, 2013, 5:15 PM EST) -- A Florida appeals court reversed a $28.6 million damages award against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in a suit brought by the daughter of a smoker who died of lung cancer, ordering on Wednesday a new trial on the damages.

In its second pass at this case, Florida's First District Court of Appeal said the trial court erred when it failed to order a new damages trial following R.J. Reynolds' objection to the remitted damages amounts.
