2012 Highmark-UPMC Deal Approved, Suits To Be Dropped

Law360, New York (December 20, 2013, 4:29 PM EST) -- A Pennsylvania federal judge on Friday ordered the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and insurer Highmark Inc. to dismiss their dueling antitrust lawsuits and agreed to enforce a settlement agreement they reached in 2012.

The antitrust suits have been ongoing since 2009, when West Penn Allegheny Health System Inc. accused UPMC and Highmark of attempting to stifle competition. After Highmark bought the Pittsburgh-based academic medical center for $604.2 million, the suit was redirected at UPMC only. In 2012, UPMC filed its own suit against the insurer...
