Mass. High Court Urged To Nix Taxes On Conservation Land

Law360, New York (January 7, 2014, 5:53 PM EST) -- A nonprofit group that owns conservation land in rural Massachusetts urged the state's high court on Monday to rule that its land is exempt from local property taxes, saying its ability to preserve land in the future may be hindered if it must pay taxes for land it owns.

New England Forestry Foundation Inc. claims that a 134-acre plot it owns in northwest Massachusetts, in the town of Hawley, is exempt from local property taxes. At issue is whether simply owning conservation land, as NEFF does,...
