Law360, New York (January 8, 2014, 5:14 PM EST) -- Midwestern utility Kansas City Power & Light Co. said Wednesday that it would buy 400 megawatts of power from two wind farms being built in the Kansas City region by EDP Renovaveis SA's North American unit and private equity-backed Element Power US LLC, doubling its renewable energy portfolio.
KCP&L, which serves about 800,000 customers in the Kansas City region, said the projects — 200-megawatt wind farms being built in Kansas and Missouri — will provide enough energy to power up to approximately 122,000 homes and will increase its total wind energy portfolio to 939 megawatts.
