New Bill Seeks To Stall Alaskan Oil Leasing

Law360 (March 13, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A contingent of Democratic lawmakers introduced legislation Tuesday aimed at prohibiting oil and gas leasing in certain areas of Alaska until it is determined whether to list the polar bear as an endangered species.

The bill, known as H.R. 5588, was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and co-sponsored by Reps. Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), Jay Inslee (D-Wash.) and John Larson (D-Conn.).

It was immediately referred to the Committee on Natural Resources, according to the House's Web site.
