Japan Steel Makers Uneasy Over BHP-Rio Merger

Law360 (March 14, 2008, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Joining the call to examine BHP Billiton Ltd.'s ongoing attempt to take over Rio Tinto Plc, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation said Thursday that it has formally asked the country's Fair Trade Commission to look for possible antitrust problems.

The federation said it hopes to safeguard Japanese steel makers' negotiating leverage with the natural resource titans and that it has asked the JFTC to take necessary steps to ensure that iron ore and coal trading remain competitive.
