South Africa Ends 5-Year Supermarket Antitrust Probe

Law360, New York (January 27, 2014, 2:29 PM EST) -- South Africa's antitrust watchdog on Friday closed its investigation into exclusive lease agreements in the supermarket industry, saying it didn't have enough evidence to prove the deals harmed competition despite its continuing concerns.

The Competition Commission said that although it still had concerns about the exclusive arrangements, which can sometimes last four decades, it did not believe it could meet the burden of proof needed to take the case to the South African Competition Tribunal.
