EU Panel Backs Plan To Ban Invasive Plants, Animals

Law360, New York (January 30, 2014, 6:39 PM EST) -- Members of a European Union parliamentary committee voted Thursday to advance a proposal to ban invasive alien species including plants, animals and insects that can carry diseases, harm the environment or cause economic losses from entering the EU.

The European Parliament's Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety voted by a margin of 46-7, with one abstention, to give Czech MEP Pavel Poc, who is shepherding the legislation through Parliament, a mandate to begin negotiations with member states over the proposal.
