Hospitals See Opening As Medicare Delays '2-Midnight' Rule

Law360, New York (February 3, 2014, 7:23 PM EST) -- Medicare’s decision Friday to delay enforcement of a sharply criticized policy that generally requires hospital admissions to cross two midnights to warrant reimbursement is a tacit admission that the agency moved too swiftly, according to experts who say providers should use the extra time to lobby for more exceptions to the rule.

The announcement, which pushes back post-payment audits to Oct. 1 from April 1, marked the third and longest delay of a new time-based approach that regulators finalized last year.
