Coal Ash Woes Mount For Duke As Spill Fouls NC River

Law360, New York (February 4, 2014, 2:11 PM EST) -- Duke Energy Corp. said Monday that up to 82,000 tons of coal ash have spilled into North Carolina's Dan River due to a broken stormwater pipe at a shuttered coal-fired power plant, the latest headache for the energy company involving alleged coal ash pollution at its North Carolina plants.

Duke said between 50,000 and 82,000 tons of coal ash — which would fill between 20 and 32 Olympic-size swimming pools — have flowed into the river from an ash pond at its Dan River Steam Station,...
